| A New Option for Insomnia |
|
Currently more than 70 million Americans suffer from insomnia. Fortunately, there’s a new kid on the block when it comes to treating insomnia. It’s a prescription remedy called Rozerem (ramelteon). Rozerem works differently in that it is less likely to cause dependence like other prescription sleep aids. Rozerem works with melatonin in the body. However, it is more potent than over-the-counter melatonin preparations that claim to aid with sleep.
Consider Rozerem if you have trouble falling asleep. You take it within 30 minutes of going to bed. Take note that the absorption of Rozerem is delayed and increased when taken with food. Therefore, it should not be taken with or immediately after a high fat meal.
Rozerem has few reported side effects. The most common side effects are dizziness and drowsiness. Do not drive a vehicle after taking Rozerem. It is also not wise to combine Rozerem with alcohol. Rozerem has also been associated with decreased testosterone levels and prolactin levels. For this reason, it is not known what effects long-term Rozerem therapy has on fertility and libido.
Rozerem does have the potential to interact with other medications. Have your pharmacist look over your medication profile to make sure you are not taking any other medications that could interact with Rozerem.
Please note that Rozerem has not been studied in patients with severe sleep apnea or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). For this reason, it is not recommended for use in these people. Before starting any prescription or over-the-counter sleep aid, it is important to be thoroughly evaluated a doctor. Sometimes, having trouble sleeping can be a sign of another condition like depression or anxiety. Whenever possible, non-medication options for promoting sleep should be tried first. Meditation or visualization exercises may be helpful.
