| Chondroitin and Prostate Cancer |

Chondroitin sulfate supplements are commonly used to help ease the pain and progression of joint pain. Available over-the-counter, chondroitin is typically combined with glucosamine. Studies have suggested that both ingredients together may be more effective that either ingredient alone. Recently, one study found that cancerous prostate tissue contains higher levels of chondroitin sulfate than non-cancerous prostate tissue. There is also evidence that higher levels of chondroitin sulfate around a prostate tumor may help make the tumor more aggressive. Keep in mind that this study did not specifically look at if taking chondroitin supplements can contribute to prostate cancer. It merely made an observation with regard to chondroitin levels in the body. Still, since chondroitin sulfate is marketed as a nutritional supplement, it has not required the vigorous testing to prove that it is safe and effective as prescription and over-the-counter medications do. As a result, there is still much about the supplement we do not know. Further studies are needed to show if chondroitin contributes to prostate cancer. In the meantime, it may be prudent to refrain from using chondroitin supplements, particularly if you suffer from or at an increased risk for prostate cancer. If you insist on taking a natural supplement for your join pain, you may want to try glucosamine by itself. As always, talk to your doctor first before beginning any regime for your joint pain.
