Herbs, Spices and Your Health

Throughout history, different cultures have valued certain herbs and spices for their health benefits. Food Technology magazine recently took a look at recent studies to determine if certain herbs and spices found in many of today’s favorite dishes may be beneficial to one’s health.

Despite the fact that many of the herbs and spices looked at in modern day studies have been used for hundreds of years for their preventative and curative properties, many recent studies have shown conflicting results. But the news isn’t all bad as some herbs and spices such as ginger, mint and certain peppers, may have anti-inflammatory properties. Still others may have cancer-fighting properties such as oregano and garlic.

Most consumers are aware of the history and recent research behind the use of these herbs and spices. This awareness has surely helped feed the success of the herbal supplement industry over the last few decades.  Unfortunately, most consumers use supplements without regard to evidence-based guidelines. Using herbal, over-the-counter products indiscriminately may not be in one’s best interest.  There is currently a lack of study showing just how effective and safe these supplements may be.
