Singulair and Psychiatric Side Effects

Singulair (montelukast) is a popular prescription drug used to treat asthma and allergies. Now the FDA is requesting the manufacturer include a precaution in the drug prescribing information to let doctors and consumers know about new side effects discovered with the drug.

Recently, some people taking Singulair have reported psychiatric issues. These issues have included insomnia, anxiety, depression and agitation. Although not all patients taking Singulair will experience these side effects, however, it is still advisable to watch out for them and report any potential side effects to your physician.

Because they are similar in structure to Singulair, it is possible that these side effects could occur with drugs like Accolate and Zyflo. If you are taking any of these medications and suspect any of the side effects listed above, you can talk to your doctor about switching to a different medication. For allergies, antihistamines or nasal steroids may be appropriate. For asthma, inhaled steroids are strongly recommended for most people.
