| Progesterone: The New Miracle Hormone? |
|
Suzanne Somers has popularized the concept that bio-identical hormones may prevent certain diseases, minimize the symptoms of menopause and slow the process of aging. Bio-identical hormones are hormone supplements whose chemical structure is identical to the human structure of that hormone. Bio-identical hormones are not able to be patented because they resemble chemicals produced in the human body. Therefore, drug companies have not wasted their time producing bio-identical supplements because there is no profit in them. Bio-identical hormones are typically available by prescription and obtained at specialty compounding pharmacies.
In fact, Dr. Platt shares that he only prescribes estrogen supplements for certain patients because it can increase the risk of heart disease, stroke and certain types of cancer. Progesterone, he notes, is involved in many key chemical reactions in the body and can affect many different body systems including those involved in metabolism, heart function, temperature regulation, bone development and brain function (among others).
